Polyermization
Polymerization is a process in which smaller building units become incorporated into larger polymer molecules. Polymerization is the standard spelling. The resulting material’s properties depend on its chemical structure, chain arrangement, and processing.
Meaning and context
Different mechanisms build chains in different ways. Introductory descriptions often distinguish chain-growth and step-growth processes. Those categories do not mean that every polymer is produced by one identical reaction or under the same conditions.

Examples and usage
Ethene can be used as a textbook example of a monomer associated with polyethylene. The repeating structure reflects changes in bonding as units become part of a chain. A polymer’s repeat unit is not always identical in composition to a freely isolated starting molecule.
What to check
A general explanation does not specify a manufacturing or laboratory procedure. Catalysts, conditions, and safety requirements vary. Also distinguish a polymer molecule from a formulated plastic product, which may contain additives and other components.
