Brazil major languages
Portuguese is Brazil’s official language and the principal language used nationally. Brazilian Portuguese has its own patterns of pronunciation, vocabulary, and usage. Brazil also has Indigenous, immigrant, and other language communities, so Portuguese does not describe every individual’s linguistic background.
Meaning and context
A national language label is different from a complete account of language diversity. Regional communities may use additional languages in daily life. Sign languages also belong in a discussion of language access rather than being treated as an afterthought.

Examples and usage
For a general national translation project, Brazilian Portuguese is usually the appropriate locale to specify. That does not mean that a translation for every Indigenous community or a signed-language audience can be handled by the same text. Identify the actual readers or viewers.
What to check
Avoid calling Spanish the default language of Brazil merely because it is common elsewhere in South America. For a service, school, or legal requirement, consult the institution’s instructions. A country-level summary is a starting point, not a substitute for knowing a person’s preferred language.
