Pyramids at giza location
The Pyramids of Giza stand on the Giza Plateau, on the western edge of the Nile Valley in Egypt. The site is near the modern city of Giza and lies across the river from central Cairo.
Historical context
The plateau includes the pyramids associated with Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, along with smaller tombs and monuments. The Great Sphinx is also part of the wider Giza archaeological landscape.
Example and significance
Giza is part of the greater Cairo metropolitan area, but the pyramids are not in the center of Cairo. Their location connects the ancient necropolis with the Nile’s western desert margin.

The plateau and its setting
The Giza complex developed during Egypt’s Old Kingdom on elevated ground west of the Nile floodplain. The location connected royal burial monuments with the capital region and the resources needed for construction. The plateau is part of a larger archaeological landscape.
