Ribosome assembly

Ribosome assembly is the process by which ribosomal RNA and proteins come together to form functional ribosomal subunits. Ribosomes then read messenger RNA and help build proteins.

How it works

In eukaryotic cells, much ribosomal RNA is produced and initial assembly occurs in the nucleolus. Ribosomal proteins are made in the cytoplasm and transported into the nucleus, where they join RNA before subunits are exported.

Example or application

The small subunit helps position messenger RNA, while the large subunit catalyzes peptide-bond formation. The exact composition differs between prokaryotic and eukaryotic ribosomes.

Scope and limits

Assembly involves many steps and quality checks, not simply snapping a few parts together. Details vary among organisms and cell types.
