Property chemistry definition
A property is a characteristic used to describe or distinguish a material. Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing chemical identity, while chemical properties concern the material’s capacity to undergo chemical change.
Meaning and context
Density, melting point, and electrical conductivity are familiar physical properties. Flammability and reactivity under specified conditions are chemical properties. The distinction concerns the kind of characteristic, not whether a measurement is easy to perform.

Examples and usage
Mass and volume depend on how much material is present, while density is an intensive property under specified conditions. A description should state relevant conditions, since properties such as solubility and conductivity can depend on temperature or composition.
What to check
A property label is not a safety conclusion. Two materials sharing a color or density can behave very differently. Identify the substance, measurement conditions, and relevant evidence before using a property to support a practical decision.
