What is formal prose

Formal prose is writing in ordinary sentences and paragraphs that uses a register suited to a serious or professional context. It is not poetry, and it does not require deliberately complicated vocabulary. Clear organization and precise language matter more than stiffness.

Meaning and context

Prose describes the general form, while formal describes the register. A novel, email, report, and policy can all use prose, but they do not all use the same tone. The reader’s needs and the document’s purpose determine the appropriate level of formality.

Examples and usage

The original sentence Please submit the completed form by Friday is direct and formal enough for many workplace notices. A research discussion may need technical terminology, but the terms should serve the explanation rather than decorate it.

What to check

Formal does not automatically mean passive voice, long sentences, or avoidance of every first-person pronoun. Follow the relevant discipline or publication’s conventions. Revise vague wording and unsupported claims before replacing familiar words with longer synonyms.
