List of planets from sun
The eight recognized planets in order outward from the Sun are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union.
How it works
The first four planets are rocky terrestrial worlds. Jupiter and Saturn are gas giants, while Uranus and Neptune are commonly called ice giants. The categories describe broad composition and structure.

Example or application
A mnemonic can help recall the sequence, but checking the names directly avoids ambiguity. The order is based on each planet’s average orbital distance from the Sun.
Scope and limits
Planet definitions and classifications are set by scientific bodies and can be discussed, but standard current educational lists include eight planets. Dwarf planets are a separate category.
