Multination state

A multinational state is a country that includes more than one nation or national community within its political boundaries. The communities may have distinct languages, histories, identities, or cultural traditions.

How it works

The term “nation” can refer to a people who share an identity, while “state” refers to a political entity with territory and institutions. A multinational state may recognize regional autonomy or use shared national institutions.

Example or application

Examples are discussed differently by scholars because identity and political arrangements change over time. The label is most useful when explaining how multiple national communities relate within one state.

Scope and limits

There is no single checklist that classifies every country. Use the term with context and avoid assuming that all members of a group share one view.
