Roman figures 1-100

Roman numerals from one to one hundred use I, V, X, L, and C in standard combinations. These symbols represent one, five, ten, fifty, and one hundred. Recognizing the tens and ones patterns is easier than memorizing every number separately.

Meaning and context

The ones pattern is I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX. The tens pattern is X, XX, XXX, XL, L, LX, LXX, LXXX, XC. Combine a tens group with a ones group when both are present.

Examples and usage

For 47, combine XL and VII to obtain XLVII. For 89, combine LXXX and IX to obtain LXXXIX. Ninety-nine is XCIX, and one hundred is C. Each subtractive pair needs to be read as a unit.

What to check

These are conventional modern forms for ordinary exercises. Historical inscriptions can show variants. This guide gives a construction method and worked examples; when a task requests a complete chart, check each entry against the tens-and-ones pattern rather than inventing nonstandard subtractive combinations.
