Label the membranous organelles.

Membranous organelles are cell structures enclosed by one or more membranes. In a typical animal cell diagram, these include the nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, mitochondria, lysosomes, and transport vesicles.

How it works

The nucleus houses most cellular DNA. The endoplasmic reticulum helps make proteins and lipids, while the Golgi modifies and sorts many products. Mitochondria carry out major steps in energy conversion, and lysosomes digest materials.

Example or application

When labeling a diagram, use the shape and position as clues, then connect each structure to its function. Ribosomes are often shown on rough ER, but ribosomes themselves are not membrane-bound organelles.

Scope and limits

Cell diagrams are simplified and vary by textbook. Animal cells do not all have identical numbers, shapes, or arrangements of organelles.
