Linguistic expression

A linguistic expression is a meaningful unit or form in language, such as a word, phrase, or sentence. The term is broad. Its precise scope depends on whether the discussion concerns grammar, meaning, communication, or a formal linguistic analysis.

Meaning and context

Expression does not necessarily mean an idiom or a person’s emotional expression. In language analysis, it can simply identify a piece of language under discussion. A writer should define a narrower use if the argument depends on it.

Examples and usage

The word tree is an expression, as is the phrase under the table. A complete sentence can also be an expression. An idiom such as spill the beans is a particular kind of expression whose established meaning is not simply the sum of its literal words.

What to check

When an exercise asks you to identify an expression, examine the example and the lesson’s terminology. It may expect a phrase, idiom, or grammatical construction rather than the broad technical category. Explain the features that support your answer instead of relying on the label alone.
