Microwave mason jars

Some glass jars may tolerate microwave heating, but a Mason jar’s shape, condition, lid, and temperature change matter. Metal lids must not be placed in a microwave.

Ingredient and use

Avoid heating a cold jar rapidly, using damaged glass, or sealing a container while heating. Follow the jar maker’s instructions and use microwave-safe containers designed for reheating.

How it differs

Glass can crack from thermal shock, and a jar may heat unevenly or trap steam. Remove metal rings and lids, do not microwave sealed containers, and stop if glass is damaged. Manufacturer labeling is the best guide because jar designs are not all microwave rated.

Food handling context

Use a microwave-safe container with room for steam to escape. Never use a sealed jar, metal lid, or chipped glass. Even if a jar is made of canning glass, that does not automatically certify it for microwave use; follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
